Also referred to as gluteal or buttock augmentation, this procedure has seen a significant rise in popularity in recent years. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, buttock augmentation surgery increased by 252% between 2000 and 2015.
Common types of procedures related to buttock enhancement include butt lifts, implants, and fat grafting.
Although butt implant surgeries are widely sought after, they do carry certain risks. It’s important to discuss the potential benefits, side effects, expected costs, and recovery time with a board-certified surgeon before proceeding.

In this procedure, your surgeon extracts fat from another part of your body, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, using liposuction. Sculptra Butt Lift
The Sculptra butt lift involves injecting a filler called Sculptra into the soft tissue of the buttocks. This procedure is typically done in a doctor’s office with minimal recovery time.
The filler adds an immediate, small volume, and over the course of several weeks to months, your body gradually forms additional collagen, which can further enhance the volume in the treated area.
This procedure often requires several sessions and multiple vials of Sculptra per session, making it a more expensive option.
Hydrogel and Silicone Buttock Injections
Hydrogel buttock injections are sometimes promoted as a more affordable option for augmentation. However, this method offers only temporary results and doesn’t require traditional surgery. It is also associated with significant risks.
Similarly, silicone injections don’t involve surgery and don’t directly alter the shape of the buttocks. While some have considered using silicone injections as an alternative to butt implants, this approach is strongly discouraged. Silicone injections for the buttocks can be extremely hazardous.
Silicone Implants
Silicone is the material commonly used for butt implants. Unlike injections, which are temporary, solid silicone implants are surgically inserted into the buttocks through an incision made between the cheeks.
This procedure is often combined with fat grafting for optimal results. Recovery from buttock surgery typically takes up to four weeks.
