Recovery: What to Expect

Immediate Post-Operative Period (Days 1-7)

The first week after surgery is the most intensive recovery period. You’ll wake up wearing compression garments and surgical dressings designed to minimize swelling and support your healing tissues. Pain and discomfort are normal and well-managed with prescribed medications. Most patients describe the sensation as tightness and soreness rather than sharp pain.

You’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24-48 hours. Rest is crucial during this period, and you should plan to sleep in a reclining position to reduce swelling and tension on your incisions. Light walking is encouraged from the first day to promote circulation and prevent blood clots, but all other activities should be minimal.

Early Recovery Phase (Weeks 1-3)

As you enter the second and third weeks, you’ll notice gradual improvements in your comfort level and mobility. Swelling and bruising will begin to subside, and you may start to see early glimpses of your results. Most patients can return to light desk work after 1-2 weeks, though this varies depending on the procedures performed and individual healing rates.

During this phase, you’ll have several follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress. Sutures may be removed, and your compression garments may be adjusted or changed. You can gradually increase your activity level as directed by your surgeon, but heavy lifting and strenuous exercise remain prohibited.
