The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthetic, although it can be performed under heavy or “twilight” sedation which reduces recovery time. Generally the surgeon will work from the inside of the nose; the skin and external area is not touched from the outside which means there are no visible scars.

In open Rhinoplasty a tiny scar is made outside. The actual technique used will depend on the type of reshaping to be done, and your surgeon will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Reasons for Rhinoplasty

People opt for rhinoplasty for various reasons, including to fix nasal injuries, correct breathing difficulties, address birth defects, or enhance the nose’s appearance. Rhinoplasty can alter the nose in several ways, such as:

Adjusting its size
Changing its angle
Straightening the bridge
Reshaping the tip
Narrowing the nostrils

For cosmetic reasons, it’s best to wait until the nose has fully developed, typically around age 15 for females, though males may need to wait longer. However, rhinoplasty can be performed earlier for functional reasons.

As with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries potential risks. Your surgeon will discuss these considerations with you in detail during your consultation, ensuring you are fully informed before deciding to proceed.

Preparation for Nose Job

Preparing for rhinoplasty begins with an initial consultation where your surgeon will assess whether you’re a good candidate for the surgery. During this meeting, you’ll discuss your reasons for wanting the procedure and the goals you hope to achieve. The surgeon will also review your medical history, medications, and any existing medical conditions that could affect the surgery. If you have conditions like hemophilia, which causes excessive bleeding, the surgeon may recommend against elective surgery.

The surgeon will conduct a physical examination of your nose, looking at both the inside and outside to determine the appropriate changes for your desired outcome. In some cases, lab tests or blood work may be necessary. If your surgeon believes you might benefit from another procedure, such as a chin augmentation or any additional surgery, they will discuss this with you.

Photographs of your nose will be taken from various angles to track your progress and aid in assessing the results after surgery. Additionally, it’s important to clarify the costs of rhinoplasty, as it is generally not covered by insurance if performed for cosmetic reasons.

In preparation for surgery, you’ll need to stop taking medications like ibuprofen or aspirin two weeks before and two weeks after the procedure, as these can increase bleeding. It’s essential to inform your surgeon about any supplements or medications you’re using so they can advise you accordingly.

Recovery Process After Rhinoplasty

Post-Surgery Monitoring
After the procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery room for several hours. If the surgery was uncomplicated, you’ll be discharged the same day. If more complex, a hospital stay may be required for one or two days.
Nasal Care
Your doctor will place a splint to support the newly shaped nose and may use nasal packing to stabilize the septum. Resting with your head elevated is crucial for minimizing swelling.
Pain Management
Pain or discomfort is common in the initial days. Your doctor may prescribe painkillers, and you can apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes.
Activity Restrictions
Avoid strenuous activities like running, swimming, or excessive facial movements, such as smiling or laughing, for at least a few weeks. Refrain from blowing your nose to prevent pressure on the healing nasal passages.
Medications and Care
Follow the doctor’s guidance on cleaning the area and taking prescribed medications. Use drip pads to absorb any bleeding and mucus drainage in the first few days.
Follow-Up Appointments
Regular check-ups are essential to ensure your recovery is on track. Your doctor will monitor the healing process and remove any non-absorbable stitches. Stay consistent with follow-up visits.
Resuming Normal Activities
Most patients can return to work or school after about a week, but avoid any activities that could strain your nose or interfere with healing. It might take up to a year for the full results to become apparent.
Avoiding Sun Exposure
Protect your nose from sun exposure to avoid skin discoloration. Use sunscreen to shield the sensitive skin around the nose.

Hello Everyone – I recently attended Linia Cosmetic Clinic at Harley Street. Yes! I was scared, nervous and excited at the prospect of an “S” lift, eye procedure and B.A whilst being aware and awake. Dr Aslam has been great during this experience. The Linia team and nurse staff have also done all they could to support me. I found having my op under local strange at first (I have a fear of needles). I was very worried – but having it done was great compared to general. My recovery time was much less and I was back to work much sooner than expected.

Local anaesthetic was a much better experience than general. It was more relaxed and less painful. Recovery time was a lot quicker – there was no drowsiness or feeling sick. I would definitely use this option again if needed.
