Should you get a nose job?

Considered by many experts to be the cornerstone of the face, the nose is hugely important.

Depending on its location, size, and shape, it can enhance and complement your other features, like your eyes and smile, or it can badly distract from those more positive features.

If you feel unhappy with the way your nose looks, you could have a nose job. Is it worth getting, though? That’s what we are going to discuss.

There is no simple answer to the question of whether you should get a nose job or not. You need to make an informed decision based on research and should not rush into it.

To help you, we will look at the genuine benefits of rhinoplasty and the downsides, too, so that you have all the essential facts.

Is getting a nose job worth it?

Is a nose job really worth it? Like the question of whether you should get one or not, that is also very hard to answer on behalf of somebody else.

You will not really know for sure until after you have had it done.

There are important considerations you need to make and things you need to keep in mind when coming to the decision, though.

Do Lots of Research on the Rhinoplasty Procedure

You may not think it’s any skin off our nose whether you decide to have rhinoplasty at our clinic or not.

Obviously, we welcome your business and would prefer if you came to our surgeons with years of rhinoplasty experience, but we would be irresponsible if we didn’t tell you that you should research as much as you can into rhinoplasty and cosmetic surgery in general.

As well as ensuring that you find the best surgeon to perform the work, doing proper research will also help you to have more realistic expectations about the results.

Always look at the before and after pictures, so you can see recorded evidence of how good (or bad) a surgeon may be.

Ensure they have extensive experience and all of the relevant qualifications and case studies.

Remember, not only are you spending a lot of money, you are putting your physical wellbeing and health in their hands.

Look at videos of the actual procedure too to understand what you’ll be going through.

You want to make sure you make the right decision about who you give that responsibility to.

Understand the Difference Between Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

You may not have realised it until now, but there are actually two specific procedures that come under the umbrella term of rhinoplasty.

These are closed and open rhinoplasties.

Open Rhinoplasty

This form of nose reshaping often involves the folding of your nose skin in half. Though there are a variety of different forms.

With this surgery, the swelling is increased as is the healing and recovery time.

Additionally, there is also the increased risk of nose tip necrosis (that is, the loss of the nose tip or death of the tissue).

A risk that is incredibly rare in closed rhinoplasties.

Closed Rhinoplasty

This treatment involves surgery where there are no external cuts and incisions made.

Generally speaking, patients can return to work after just one week.

However, full recovery depends on the techniques and type of open rhinoplasty the surgeon opts for.

Thanks to the gentle handling of the nose tissue and this closed technique, your nose could look more natural and normal within just one week.

There will still be minor swelling, that could increase during the second week following surgery, but for most patients, it’s not noticeable.

The hard plastic cover or splint will come off within seven days and although there will be some bruising during the first week of recovery, it doesn’t last too long.

Even in situations where it does, it can be easily covered up with makeup.

Things to Know Before You Get a Rhinoplasty

There are some things you should know before you even consider getting a nose job. Have you considered and are comfortable with the following:

Nose Reshaping Perfection Does Not Exist

We already noted that you need to manage your expectations about what can be achieved with rhinoplasty surgery.

Even with the finest rhinoplasty surgeon in the world, it is unlikely to produce perfect results. The rhinoplasty procedure is not about perfection.

It is about helping people to have more attractive noses that suit their face better.

The Results Take Time

As is the case with most cosmetic surgery, the results will already be noticeable.

However, as outlined above, you will have a lot of bruising, swelling and your body will need to heal properly before you will really see the benefit.

Plastic Surgery Aftercare is Crucial

During the recovery period, there are things you can and can’t do to make the whole experience quicker and easier on yourself.

For instance, you should avoid aspirin, omega 3 oils and other medication that could cause your blood to thin, as this will increase the chance of bleeding following the operation.

The plastic surgeon that performs the surgery will provide you with all the information and instructions you need to ensure you look after yourself properly.

What is the best age to get a nose job?

Generally speaking, if you are looking to have a nose job done for purely cosmetic reasons, you need to be 18 years old and over.

By then, your nose will have grown to its full size and shape.

There are certain circumstances when someone under 18 can have a nose job done if the nose reshaping rhinoplasty helps address functional breathing problems and medical conditions.

Your GP may even recommend or refer you for facial plastic surgery.

How often do nose jobs go wrong?

There are always risks associated with plastic surgery, and as rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult of all disciplines, the risks and complications are even greater.

It is hard to say how many nose jobs fail or go wrong, but many experts suggest it is at least 10%.

While it’s true that’s not exactly a high number, compared to the 85 to 90% that goes right, it is still worth considering.

When nose jobs do go wrong, some of the common complications and risks that happen as a result include:

  • Heavy nosebleeds
  • Altered sense of smell
  • Cartilage wall damage between the nostrils
  • Permanent difficulties breathing

In addition to the above, there are more general complications and risks of any form of cosmetic surgery, like:

  • Allergic reactions to anaesthetic
  • Infections
  • Blood clots in a vein
  • Excessive bleeding

The surgeon you choose to perform your rhinoplasty will explain the chance you have of suffering these complications and risks and potential treatment if you do suffer from them.

In the event that the nose job does go wrong and your nose does not look like how you thought it would, you may be able to have revision surgery.

Revision rhinoplasty is something you should discuss with the plastic surgeon or plastic surgeons at the practice where you are going to have the work done.

You will need to be aware of whether it will be you that has to pay some of the cost for revision rhinoplasty or if the plastic surgeon will cover it.

Although surgeons have very skilled hands, another problem that can prevent rhinoplasty from being a success is if you do not have good tissue or don’t respond well to the healing process.

Genetics can hinder the good work that a plastic surgeon does, even if they are incredibly gifted, particularly if you have poor skin and weak cartilage around the area.

Do nose jobs make a difference?

Due to how complicated the procedure is, there is no guarantee on the results even the most experienced and talented cosmetic surgeon is likely to achieve performing rhinoplasty.

However, at the core of why nose reshaping surgery is so popular is the idea of creating facial harmony.

The idea of having a well-balanced face where all the features are proportionately sized with one another.

Many see their unappealing nose shape or size as the main issue with their facial features and think their looks will be greatly improved with “work done”.

There is no doubt about it, changing your appearance, especially by altering and reworking your nose, could increase your self-confidence and self-esteem.

After all, it is central to your face and one of the first things others will notice.

Obviously, if you are serious about rhinoplasty, you will have an idea of the aspects of your nose you don’t like.

The procedure can really make a difference to these and some of the most common examples of what rhinoplasty can be performed on:

  • A nose that is either too small or too prominent
  • Creased tip in your nose
  • A tip that is bulbous, big or is set at a particularly sharp angle
  • What is known as a deep radix, that looks like a large hump
  • Bridge with a large hump
  • Crooked nostrils or bridge

Other issues that rhinoplasty can help with is if you wear glasses and they never seem to sit comfortably on your nose and face, or you have breathing troubles.

Summary

Hopefully, you now have a better idea of whether you want to go ahead with rhinoplasty or not.

If you are still on the fence about it or have reservations, it’s best to wait and do some research, talk to experts, talk to people who have had the procedure.
